Our competitive programs of Marching Band and Winter Percussion represent a serious commitment of time and energy. In addition to performance skills, much like competitive sports programs, participants learn team work, responsibility and leadership. Band members have an obligation to the band to consistently attend practices and perform to their fullest. These programs have significant expenses to maintain their competitive nature. The majority of these expenses are for instructors and transportation. Marching Band costs are typically $700 and Winter Percussion $500. The band boosters provide band families with many ways of fundraising their band fees. Some families raise all their funds simply by shopping with grocery certificates, others sell seasonal products like peaches or Christmas trees.

Marching Band
The Ponderosa High School Marching band performs for home football games and competes in competitions during the fall. The PHS marching band has been state champions 9 time since the school opened. Marching band season begins with sectional practices over the summer and a weeklong band camp just prior to school beginning. The season concludes with the Colorado Bandmasters Association state championships in late October.

Color Guard
The color guard adds visual effects to the fall marching program. They use a variety of dance techniques and utilize flags and rifles in their dance routines.

Winter Guard
This is a continuation of the Color Guard program after Marching Season is over. Depending on the makeup of the group, they have competed as a separate group, and have also been part of the Winter Percussion group in the past. This is a great opportunity for Color Guard participants to continue their involvement after Marching Season.

Winter Percussion Ensemble
Until you have heard them play, you can't imagine the wonderful sounds that come from an ensemble made up solely of percussion instruments. This group rehearses during evenings and Saturdays after Marching Season is finished and competes in competitions January - March. Students who do not normally play a percussion instrument but would like to be part of this group are welcome to come and learn something new
